Sea Turtle Snorkeling in Waikiki – Sea Turtle Conservation Day
In the calm waters off Waikīkī, participants join our conservation team for a guided sea turtle snorkeling experience focused on long-term monitoring:
- Photograph wild sea turtles and contribute images to our identification database.
- Help identify new turtles and assist in naming them for population tracking.
- Learn about sea turtle ecology, threats to their survival, and the importance of community science in protecting honu.



Why It Matters
Hawaiian green sea turtles are a threatened species. By documenting individual turtles, we can monitor population health, track behavior and habitat use, and adapt conservation strategies as ocean conditions change. Each participant’s contribution supports long-term research and directly aids in safeguarding these iconic marine animals.
Full-Day Schedule
- 10:30 AM – Welcome and Sea Turtle Ecology Presenation.
- 11:30 AM – Boat Departure
- 11:30 AM – 1 PM – Snorkeling and Sea Turtle Imagery / Data Colleciton at Turtle Canyons in Waikiki
- 1 PM – 1:30 PM – Pattern Recognition of Sea Turtle Images and Naming of New Individuals
- 1:30 PM – End of Program

Yes! This Tour is perfect for beginners and first timers, we just ask that you have basic swimming skills
Can I bring my own snorkel gear?
You’re absolutely welcome to bring your own gear, but if there’s anything you’re missing, we’ve got you covered, all snorkel equipment is provided and included in the tour cost.
What’s included in the price (gear, snacks, photos, etc.)?
All snorkeling gear. Instruction and guidance by trained marine biologists and conservation divers. Educational materials and access to collected turtle data. And the best of all, You get to take-home photos and the chance to leave a legacy by helping name a newly identified turtle.

Do I need to know how to swim to join the tour?
Basic swimming skills are required to participate in the tour.
Can children join the tour?
Yes! This tour is perfect for children, families, couples, and anyone interested in being part of Hawaiʻi’s sea turtle conservation efforts.
What should I bring with me on the tour?
We recommend bringing a swimsuit, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, and a reusable water bottle. If you have your own snorkel gear, you’re welcome to bring it, but all equipment is also provided. You might also want to bring a hat, and sunglasses. Please avoid aerosol sunscreens and single-use plastics to help protect Hawaiʻi’s reefs and marine life.
Are there storage options for personal belongings?
Yes! On the boat they have a space where you can store your personal belongings to stay dry.
How long is the tour, and where does it take place?
The tour takes place every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:30am-1:30pm and the boat leaves from Kewalo Basin Harbor
