Our Mission

Welcome to Ocean Alliance Project, where our mission is to protect and preserve the marine biodiversity of Hawaii’s local reefs through community-led ecological monitoring and regenerative tourism. Founded on the principles of sustainability and community engagement, the Ocean Alliance Project integrates ecological, social, economic, and governance dimensions into its core mission, ensuring a comprehensive approach to marine conservation.

Behold the breathtaking Maunalua Bay, the heartbeat of our marine research endeavors. This is more than a survey zone; it’s the watershed of inspiration that brought our nonprofit to life.

Ecological Focus: At the heart of our mission is the commitment to safeguard the unique marine ecosystems of Hawaii. With approximately 25% of the species found on Hawaiian coral reefs being endemic to the region, our emphasis on local ecological dynamics is crucial. Through cutting-edge research, conservation efforts, and community involvement, we aim to contribute significantly to the preservation of these invaluable ecosystems.

Social Engagement: Recognizing the integral role of the human dimension in marine conservation, we actively involve people in all stages of our projects. From aspiring marine biologists to scuba diving enthusiasts, our programs cater to a diverse audience. We foster local and global stewardship of reef resources by engaging volunteers and citizen scientists in our restoration efforts, building a community committed to marine conservation.

Economic Sustainability: The Ocean Alliance Project understands the economic value intertwined with healthy coral reefs. As revealed by a peer-reviewed study commissioned by NOAA, the estimated total economic value the American people hold for the coral reefs of the main Hawaiian Islands is $33.57 billion. By protecting and restoring coral reefs, we contribute not only to ecological well-being but also to the economic prosperity of local communities.

Governance and Community Involvement: Central to our reef monitoring plan is the restoration of agency to the management of marine coastal resources. We believe in long-term viability through collaboration with local and federal entities. Stakeholder engagement is at the core of our governance model, ensuring that decisions are informed by community input and align with pertinent laws and regulations.

At the Ocean Alliance Project, we are dedicated to creating a sustainable future for Hawaii’s marine ecosystems, where ecological health, community engagement, and economic vitality coexist harmoniously. Join us in our mission to make a lasting impact on the oceans that connect us all.
